Oval curved porcelain enamel heated until 900 °C (1,650 °F). The icon is on a board of high quality walnut wood, with a support, therefore it can be hung or put on a table. The board is covered with "gesso" and then gilded with 24k gold leaves. This technique, called "bole gilding"  involves the use of the highest quality materials (24k gold, Italian walnut wood) and best workmanship. Thanks to bole gilding,  the gold-gilt surface becomes very bright and smooth with exquisite red reflections.
