Documents from the Archives of the Roman Congregations of the Holy Office and the Index
Volume I - Sixteenth-Century Documents
Edited by Ugo Baldini e Leen Spruit
This work, divided into four volumes and commented entirely in English, contains the original documents (in several languages) of the Archives of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, from the sixteenth century, relating to the attitude of the Catholic Church toward the scientific and philosophical culture of the time .
In particular, among the many cases dealt with in the work, it is worth remembering the famous philosopher and Dominican friar Giordano Bruno and the Polish scientist Nicholas Copernicus.
This impressive work objective is not to provide answers or make judgments on the eternal diatribe between scientific and Catholic throught, but is simply to provide, thanks to the contributions and original records of the time, a picture as complete and detailed possible, paying attention to the doctrinal and legal aspects.
The work is particularly intended for scholars and libraries.
